About the Winery

The Neveu family, viticulteurs father and son, have been based in the heart of the Chavignol vineyards for generations, and today carry on the tradition of the great Sancerrois vignerons. Valérie (André Neveu’s daughter), and her husband Thomas, now run the domaine that extends to about 13 hectares of vines of AOC Sancerre red, white and rosé. They harvest, vinify and sell everything themselves. Silex is a very hard sedimentary rock that gives smoky aromas. The soil gives way for a mineral flavor that develops over the years. This stony and limestone soil produces elegant and fruity wines that are very pleasant when drunk young or for making more structured wines, good for long aging.

About the Wine

From the Sauvignon Blanc grape whose vines are planted on the Sancerre hillside, a terroir composed exclusively of Silex. Produced from 50 year old vines planted on a limestone pebble soil, this wine gives intense aromas, a pleasing roundness, and length in the mouth. With an incomparable color, fruity and refreshing, this is a worthy Sancerre. Powerful, the aromas as varied as they are classic: stone fruits are well represented, with hints of limestone and minerality. The mouthfeel is elegant and supple. A good balance between roundness and freshness shows on the mid-palate. Clean and lively on the finish, the persistent retro-olfaction has fruity notes of apricot and peach, this is a white Sancerre with a forthright character.

About the Winery

Pierre-Vincent Girardin is the 13th generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy. He grew up learning in the cellar of his father, Vincent Girardin, from a very young age. When the elder Girardin sold his domaine in 2011, he made sure to keep 4.5 hectares of his best sites to one day pass on to his son. In 2017, Pierre-Vincent made his first vintage and announced himself as a rising talent in Burgundy. His father’s extensive contacts in Burgundy allowed Pierre-Vincent to supplement his domaine vineyards through long term contracts with top growers who hold his meticulous viticultural philosophy. Together it represents a portfolio of terroir rarely seen under one roof, including such rare sites as village-level Puligny Folatières (Lalou Bize-Leroy bottles the only other parcel from this section of Folatières), Volnay Clos des Chênes, Pommard Epenots, Corton-Charlemagne, and even Montrachet itself. In order to make white wines with the purity, cut and precision he desires, Pierre-Vincent commissioned custom 456L barrels from Francois Freres to reduce the amount of new wood influence. For the reds, they are all made with an eye towards elegance and silkiness, highlighting the extraordinary terroir Pierre is working with. This means a long and gentle press followed by little to no pigeage and bottling unfined and unfiltered. In the many years Skurnik has worked with some of the top talents in Burgundy, it is rare for a producer’s first vintage to arrive with such a clear and definitive voice. As Pierre explains, he was learning from and helping his father in the cellar from the time he could walk. His best memories of childhood include chasing the tractor through the vineyards and being near the barrels as his father worked. Simply put, Burgundy is in his blood.

About the Wine

Coming from three lieux-dits within Vosne-Romanee: La Croixe Blanche, Lutenière, and Les Chassagnes. All vines are 30+ years old and situated on clay, limestone terroirs. Practicing organic, no herbicides or pesticides are used. With high density plantings, the wine is hand-harvested in small crates in order to minimize crushing. After manual harvest, the wine is made with 25% whole cluster and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine was then aged in 10% new 228L barrels for 12 months then an additional three months in stainless steel. The wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered. This incredibly well placed Bourgogne Rouge shows it’s Vosne credentials with ethereal aromas of wild strawberries, red currants, and ripe sour cherries. A vein of minerality keeps the wine fresh and alive, while adding complexity to the wine’s sappy and textured frame.

About the Winery

Regarded as one of the oldest wine estates of the Medoc region, Château d’Arsac has a rich and eventful history that can be traced back over nine hundred years. In the 12th Century, the property belonged to noble Sires. Then, in the 16th Century, the domain was acquired by Thomas de Montaigne, the brother of the famous philosopher, Michel de Montaigne. The arrival of the phylloxera crisis at the turn of the 20th Century and the slump in sales incited the proprietors to uproot the totality of the vines. So many vines were removed that Château d’Arsac was practically abandoned in the mid 1930’s. Château d’Arsac was acquired by Mr. Philippe Raouxin 1986. After 10 years of intense renovations and legal procedures, Château d’Arsac has now rediscovered its wine-producing vocation as well as the AOC Margaux appellation. Châteaux d’Arsac is also known by contemporary art enthusiasts for its Garden of the Sculptures and is regarded as one of the most modern and original châteaux estates of the Medoc region.

About the Wine

Coming from a 53 ha estate, the vines are situated on a melange of soils consisting of sandy, gravelly croup mixed with a thin layer of clay. The property was recently awarded Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.  After harvest, the wine was aged in both new oak barrels and vats, 30% and 70% respectively. When first poured, expect a full-bodied wine that remains elegant with smooth tannins.  This is the first vintage ever produced of this wine from the famed Chateau d’Arsac. This wine has ageability of a few years while still showing beautifully young. 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot.

Snack of the Week:

Murray’s La Tur Piemonte Soft Ripened Cheese

From the great wine region of Piemonte comes Murray's La Tur: a dense, creamy blend of pasteurized cow, goat and sheep milk. Runny and oozing around the perimeter with a moist, cakey, palette-coating paste, its flavor is earthy and full, with a lingering lactic tang. The effect is like a scoop of ice cream; decadent and melting from the outside in. Try a sparkling wine – effervescence will whisk away the richness while matching the mild acidity. We recommend you get back-up; La Tur is always the first to go at a party.
