About the Winery Domenico Almondo is the agronomist, the winemaker of the winery, as well as its owner and founder. We owe him the wine quality, the rigor and ambition to set up the high profile of the company, the pioneering courage and the inspiration of revolutionary and hard choices, especially considering the context of 30 years ago. In the cellar is the heart of the winery; made up of a space for the stainless steel tanks, one for used barrels, another one for the storage of bottles and boxes, as well as a room occupied by wine-making machineries, by machineries for packaging and, during the harvest, by the wine press. The parts of the cellar reserved to packaging, storage and aging wine in barrels are underground: this provides a natural regulation of the temperature. For white wines, on the other hand, the temperature is rigorously controlled. For what concerns white wines, tradition meets technologies: the operation of wine making is completed in absence of oxygen, in order to retain the perfumes. About the Wine For 300 years, the Almondo family has tended vines of Arneis, the noble white variety of Piedmont. Their estate is at elevation, averaging 1,148 feet above sea level. The old vines of the single vineyard, Bricco delle Ciliegie, are rooted in sand that covers an old ocean bed. Le Rive is a micro-cuvee from a sub parcel of Ciliegie that contains the oldest vines on the property. Situated 1148 feet above sea level and exposed east, the vines are situated on a mosaic of different soils: sandy with clay veins, calcareous, and limestone minerals. Cold macerated for twelve hours followed by aging; 90% in stainless steel for ten months, 10% in non-toasted French oak barriques. The wine dazzles right out of the bottle, with great aromas of white flowers, almonds and a touch of sage. The mid-palate has layers of concentrated peach and citrus fruit with a mineral streak and a long finish. The production is tiny, so don’t miss it as it is truly one of Italy’s great white wines. * * * 2020 M & C Lapierre Marcel Morgon Beaujolais Gamay Normally $44.99–$38.24 15% Off This Week ONLY! About the Winery Little would we know that when Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973, he was on the road to becoming a legend. Following the example of traditionalist Jules Chauvet, Marcel and three other local vignerons–Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton–soon hoisted the flag of Chauvet’s back-to-nature movement. Kermit Lynch dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. The Gang called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification. Sadly, the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last. His children, Mathieu and Camille continue the great work that their father pioneered, introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring that Marcel's legacy lives on. The methods at Lapierre are just as revolutionary as they are traditional; the detail and precision with which they work is striking and entirely different from the mass-produced majority of Beaujolais on the market today. Decomposed granite comprises most of their eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style. About the Wine Located on 10ha, the 60 year old gamay vines are situated in granitic gravel soils. Certified organic by Ecocert, these old vines naturally produce lower yields. Manually harvested, as late as possible to achieve maximum ripeness; followed by a rigorous sorting of the grapes. Fermented whole clutter with indigenous yeasts, the wine was aged on fine lees in old Burgundy barrels Bottled unfiltered. When poured, expect abundant cherry, violet, raspberry and a very slight touch of liquorice…Combining lightness and richness, this Morgon has an aging potential of around ten years. It should be noted that the Morgon appellation dates from 1936, only 12 years after the creation of the first AOCs, in Arbois and Châteauneuf. * * * Also Tasting Today: 2019 Xanthos Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $34.99

Invented by Elizabeth Scarbrow and first served in 1720 at the Bell Inn in Stilton, England, fame was not far behind. Made with pasteurized cows' milk, it is ripened 3-4 months under carefully controlled cool, humid conditions. These rustic farmstead cylinders are made by Colston Basset Dairy, for Neal's Yard Dairy. Each bite is exceptionally buttery in texture with a clean, mineral tang that you'll never forget. Traditionally served with Tawny Port or fresh pears. We like both. * * * |
