About the Winery

Founded by twin sisters Margarita and Francesca Padovani in 1997, Campi di Fonterenza is a biodynamically farmed estate spread over the commune of Montalcino. Though the twins grew up in Milan, the farm where they currently reside and make wine has been in the family since the 70's. Viticulture, however, does not run in the Padovani family; in fact, there were no vines whatsoever on the property until Margarita planted the first plots in 1999. Francesca quickly joined her sister on the project, and subsequent plantings took place in 2002 and 2005 over 4 hectares of vines. From the beginning, Margarita and Francesca agreed not to use chemicals in their vineyard practices, which quickly led to an interest in biodynamic viticulture and, a few years later, minimal intervention winemaking. Francesca and Margherita are firmly committed to their individual path in their famous appellation.

About the Wine

100% Sangiovese. Fonterenza hand-harvests fruit from its 1.7-hectare Brunello parcel (Vigna del Bosco) earlier for their rosato. The fruit is direct-pressed and the juice left overnight on the skins. Spontaneous fermentation is with indigenous yeasts in steel tank. The wine does not go through malo and is aged in stainless steel. The sisters When first sipped, expect a dry rosato with great mouthfeel and body. This is a food-driven wine with great minerality and nuance.

About the Winery

Brew Cru is dedicated to cool-climate wines from the Cape South Coast, sourcing grapes from maritime wine wards such as Elim and Walker Bay. Both their Elim and Walker Bay vineyards share hardened landscapes with constant gusts of Atlantic sea wind which contributes to a cooler climate. This unique terroir provides extended ripening periods and extremely low yields resulting in small, intensely flavored berries with great potential. Driven by a deep passion for Burgundian-style wines, the team at Brew Cru is constantly exploring the back roads of the Cape South Coast in search of unique vineyard pockets to produce authentic site-specific wines that reflect their wild origins.

About the Wine

This district, surrounding the seaside town of Hermanus, is reputed for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines which emanate from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. It encompasses the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Sunday’s Glen and Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (as well as the Bot River ward below). This cool-climate district benefits from persistent winds from the nearby ocean. The soils are predominantly weathered shales. The Bot River ward is the gateway to Walker Bay and encompasses the Bot River village and valley, stretching from the Bot River lagoon up into the foothills of the Groenlandberg and Babylonstoren mountain ranges, and bordering the Kogelberg Biosphere. The area is renowned for its cool maritime microclimate, which is influenced by its proximity to the lagoon and Walker Bay. Soils are mainly homogenous Bokkeveld shale (predominantly Glen Rosa and Klapmuts) and Table Mountain sandstone. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed; a portion of which was fermented with an indigenous yeast strain. The juice does not go through a secondary malolactic fermentation, however, it does go through extended lees contact for 280 days with occasional stirring. After this process, the team at Brew Cru employs 50% new French oak barrels for 10 months. No filtration and no fining upon bottling.

2017 Albino Rocca Ovello Barbaresco Nebbiolo

About the Winery

We will all miss Angelo Rocca very much after his tragic death: he was not only a great winemaker, he was also a great person, a great friend and he was great fun to be with! Wine has been bottled at this estate for four generations by the Rocca family and now Angelo's son in law Carlo and his three daughters Paola, Monica and Daniela continue making very fine red and white wines. Three vineyards contribute to the production of the Nebbiolo grapes that go into the making of the lovely Barbaresco: Vigna Loreto (within the larger cru of Ovello), Ronchi and Montersino all remarkable crus of the appellation. Vineyards in S. Rocco Seno d'Elvio were purchased from Carlo: from these a Moscato d’Asti and a Barbaresco “base” (together with grapes from the younger vines of the Ronchi and Ovello crus) are made.

The estate also offers small quantities of fruity Dolcetto and Barbera and a unique barrel fermented, stout bodied, rich still zesty flavoured white wine from the Cortese grape, a fresh and fruity Chardonnay with interesting mineral notes and a pleasant red (a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Cabernet Franc) called "Rosso di Rocca". The latest release is Barbaresco “Angelo”, made from grapes of the Ovello, Ronchi and Montersino crus and vinified in a traditional way, a tribute of Paola, Monica and Daniela to their father. These are all exceptional wines that not only reflect the unique terroir they stem from, but also the passion of this talented family as acknowledged by the Italian and international specialised press.

About the Wine

The Loreto vineyard is located on the west side of the Geographical Mention “Ovello”, in the heart of the historic area of Barbaresco. Planted in 1970, Exposed southwest-enabling great exposure in the afternoon; situated on marl, with limestone, clay and fine sand. This soil content allows for the clay to retain water with the fine sand forcing the vines to dig further down–creating great richness and texture in the wine. Aged for at least 20 months in German and Austrian oak barrels. Vinified separately for the first time in the 1980’s tells another story of Barbaresco, first a wine full of harmony accompanied by intensity, structure and warmth. Only 2,700 bottles produced.

Critical Acclaim

“The 2017 Barbaresco Ovello is fine and sculpted, as wines from this cru are, but in 2017 it has an extra bit of weight that really balances some of the natural austerity that comes so easily in Ovello. Crushed red berries, chalk, mint, white pepper and rose petal fill out the layers effortlessly. Vivid and translucent in the glass, the 2017 is incredibly beautiful and so expressive.”–94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Snack of the Week:

NEW TO THE SHOPPE–Rummo Maestri Pastai Metodo Lenta Lavorazione Spaghetti No. 3

It was 1846 when our horses Bruto, Baiardo and Bello began exploring the land in Sannio, looking for the best durum wheat. Each journey began and ended in Benevento, on the historical San Cosimo bridge which allowed the road via Appia to cross the river Sabato and reach our ancient mill. In times gone by, Benevento was a strategic site for the ancient craft of the miller. Today, after over 160 years, the ancient Rummo pasta factory of Via dei Mulini has become part of the old town of the city of Benevento and testimony of an ancient tradition. It’s thanks to this upheld tradition and the experience of six generations of master pasta-makers that Rummo Lenta Lavorazione® was born.
