About the Winery Since Von Winning Winery was founded in 1849, unique wines reflecting the vineyards in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Forst have been produced in their historic cellar. In 1907, Leopold von Winning, son-in-law of Dr. Andreas Deinhard, dedicated his life to creating top quality wines with respect to the outstanding vineyards in which he was allowed to work. He meticulously raised the quality of the wines to a new level and became a founding member of VDP, an association of German premium wineries. His decision to work as gentle and close to nature as possible remains the overarching goal of today’s young and ambitious team led by Stephan Attmann. Thus, the visionary Leopold von Winning’s legacy of great wine lives on! About the Wine Harvested in September, the vineyard is positioned 492 feet above sea level. Situated on a mélange of soils including red sandstone, limestone, loess and clay, the 25+ year old vines are farmed sustainably. After harvest, fermentation and elevage were conducted with respect to nature in the vineyard and minimal interference. When poured, coral pink hues are matched by aromas of strawberry, white pepper, and stone. On the palate, hints of watermelon mingle with touches of bruised yellow apple, and notes zesty citrus. Continually one of our favorites year after year-Just delicious! * * * 2018 Detert Family Vineyards Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon Normally $139.99–$118.99 15% Off This Week ONLY! About the Winery The Detert wines are crafted by brothers Tom and John Garrett and cousin Bill Cover, the three great-grandsons behind the Detert label. In their youth, the three got their start in winemaking while helping the family make small batches of Cabernet Franc at home in the garage. Then Tom’s career in the wine industry really began in 1999 when he joined Turley Wine Cellars in St. Helena to learn the craft as a cellar hand. From there, he spent 15 years working with exceptional winemaking mentors at some of Napa Valley’s finest wineries including Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi and Revana Family Vineyards. Since 2013, Tom has focused solely on Detert Family Vineyards and his other Napa Valley-based winery, Dakota Shy. Tom lives in Napa Valley with his wife and three boys. John lives in Petaluma with his wife and family and is still at the vineyard at every opportunity. He's grateful that the business of winegrowing involves similar experiences and rewards. Bill lives in Petaluma, CA with his wife and three girls. Located along the western foothills of Napa Valley’s celebrated Oakville district, adjacent to Crabb’s historic To Kalon estate, the Detert family vineyard has grown outstanding Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon since 1953. Over the decades, their grapes have helped establish Napa Valley, and particularly Oakville, as the prestigious Cabernet winegrowing region in the world. Four generations of their family’s winegrowing and years of consistently remarkable home wine production revealed to the team that they should be showcasing the Detert vineyard in a small production wine. The mission is to produce exceptional estate wines that are a pure expression of the land. About the Wine Planted in 1979 though coming from a 100% Detert-clone Cabernet Franc from 1949 planting, the vines for the Detert Cabernet Franc are from the historic To Kalon Vineyard. A delicious, supple Detert Cabernet Franc with the classic texture, power and range of flavors that this vineyard produces. Dense, lush and layered in the mouth, revealing flavors of licorice, dark chocolate, currant and fig preserves over a silky framework of tannin. Long, plush finish shows a range of dried herbs, currant, anise, sandalwood and cocoa that builds and builds. Totally delicious now. 85% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Critical Acclaim “Detert's 2018 Cabernet Franc is fabulous. It may very well be the single most expressive and distinctive Cabernet Franc in the valley. Deep and inky in the glass, the Detert Franc is marked by soaring aromatics and beams of saline minerality that distinguish it from the Cabernet Sauvignon in this range. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, menthol, licorice and cloves build into the huge, resonant finish.”-96 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media * * * Also Tasting Today: NV Anthill Farms Winery North Coast Pinot Noir $29.99 About the Winery Anthill Farms was established by the trio of Anthony Filiberti, David Low, and Webster Marquez who met while working at Williams-Selyem. Their first vintage was in 2004 and was made from only 8 barrels of wine. Today, Anthony and David farm small plots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah throughout Sonoma and Mendocino Counties using minimal intervention tactics and practice biodynamic farming. Anthill Farms single vineyard wines are some of the most highly sought after expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah in California. The properties are managed with intensive and meticulous farming practices, with minimal ecological impact. As for winemaking, there are two unchanging goals: to make wines that express the growing site and the characteristics of the vintage above all else, and to make wines that, simply put, taste good. These goals require gentle handling from crushing to bottling, judicious use of oak, and, perhaps most importantly, leaving the wine alone as much as possible. Outside of the mailing list, a small amount of wine is released every year to restaurants and wine shops. About the Wine While their annual appellation bottlings of Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast offer the same great winemaking and vineyard sites, their North Coast MV (multi-vintage) Pinot Noir is a value unlike any other! The North Coast Pinot Noir MV is a blend from 2018-2020 from their biodynamically farmed single vineyards across Sonoma County and Mendocino County. Fermented with native yeasts, 25% whole-cluster inclusion, the wine is the aged in 10% new French oak. This wine showcases the best of what Anthill Farms trademark for excellence. When poured, moderately saturated ruby hues lead into aromas of red cherry, black plum, apple skin and cinnamon. On the palate, this wine is lithe and textured, and a pure pleasure to drink. Refined tannins and acids keep this gulpable blend balanced and inviting. Utterly delicious. Cocktail Recipe of the Week:
