About the Winery The Mas de Cadenet is a typical Provence domaine right down to its name, which means "estate where junipers grow." Situated at the foothills of the Sainte-Victoire Mountain, the Domaine symbolizes tradition and a longstanding love story between a family and its land. The Mas de Cadenet history began in 1813, when it was purchased by Jean-Jacques Négrel and his brothers. Yet fragments of Roman amphorae found on the estate prove that wines were produced here even in antiquity. The vineyard is on a south-facing plateau, about 820 feet above sea level. The grapes were harvested at perfect maturity in the early morning in order to maintain temperature control. Subsequently, the grapes are destemmed and crushed followed by skin maceration, to allow for that soft, pink hue. The yield of the vines is naturally kept low to ensure high quality juice. Due to the special terroir and micro-climate of this area, Mas de Cadenet has more persistence and structure than a typical Provençal rosé. About the Wine When poured, reddish pink hues appear with bright, fresh aromas. On the palate, expect a creamy-textured mouthfeel accompanied by fresh red fruit flavors, such as newly picked strawberries and raspberries. With terrific mineral content and good acidity for structure, this rosé is extremely well balanced and finishes beautifully. The Cabernet Franc vines are situated on a south-facing, limestone-rich slope on the highest hill in the area. After hand harvesting, the fruit is then destemmed, with the whole berries going uncrushed into tank for fermentation with native yeasts. 100% Cabernet Franc. * * * 2018 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Grenache Normally $74.99–$63.74 15% Off This Week ONLY! About the Winery Vieux Donjon was formed in 1966 by Marcel Michel. Prior to that date, their harvest was sold in bulk to negociants. Since 1979, Vieux Donjon has been managed by Lucien Michel and Marie Michel. Following in the footsteps of their family’s young tradition, their daughter Claire Michel, (who is now Claire Fabre, as she changed her name when she married Adrien Fabre of Domaine la Florane and Domaines de l’Echevin), manages Vieux Donjon along with her brother François Michel. Claire Fabre, like many young winemakers all over the world, learn their part of the wine making trade by working as an intern at a different winery. That tradition often takes place with the aspiring intern moving to another country for a period of time. Claire worked as an intern at one of the top wineries in out in Napa, Harlan Estate. Her love of Cabernet Sauvignon, and other wines from California and the Napa Valley, has only grown stronger subsequently. Since taking over, the brother and sister team has slowly modernized the estate. In 2013, they inaugurated a new tasting room as well as updated the entire winery. About the Wine The 18 hectare Southern Rhone vineyard of Vieux Donjon is divided into 17 hectares of red Chateauneuf du Pape wine grapes and 1 hectare of vines is used for white wine grapes. The best parts of the Vieux Donjon vineyards are planted to old vine Grenache. Many of the vines are close to 100 years old, with more than 33% of their vines over 100 years of age! They have vines placed in different parts of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation in the Le Pied Long, Bois de Boursan, Le Mourre de Gaud, Champigne and Cabrieres lieux-dits. They also own vines planted in sandy soils not too far from Chateau Rayas. Vieux Donjon is an organically farmed, traditional style of Chateauneuf du Pape that ages well. Vieux Donjon is mostly traditional in their wine making as they only partially destem the grapes, a practice they began in 1993. During fermentation at Vieux Donjon, all the grape varieties are vinified together, with the exception of the Mourvedre. The wines are vinified in traditional, square shaped, red concrete vats and aged for 18 months in a combination of 80% foudres and the remaining 20% is aged in cement vats before bottling. The production is close to 4,200 cases per vintage. Vieux Donjon is another important estate that does not produce a special high-end wine, but rather just two cuvées: a red and a white. With all their old vines, this is something they could easily do, but they chose not to, as they think it will harm the blend for their main wine. * * *
