About the Winery

Can Sumoi is a long-percolating new collaboration between Pepe Raventós (of Raventos i Blanc) and childhood friend Francesc Escala. The 400-hectare estate of Can Sumoi sits at six hundred meters of altitude in the Serra de l’Home range in the Penedès. Its 350-year-old farmhouse and stone walls accommodate thirty hectares of old Montonega, Xarel-lo and Sumoll vines; stands of oak and white pine shade the rest of the surface. The certified organic vines are cultivated on limestone soils and the resulting wines are produced without additives, stabilization or filtration (although no sulfur is added, trace amounts remain in the wines as natural fermentation by-product). These wines show low alcohol and refreshingly brisk acidity.

About the Wine

The appellation of Penedes is located in the northeastern region of Catalunya. Grapes from four plots on the estate - Fidel, Torra, Rodona and Sota la Carretera. The soils here are primarily clay and limestone and very compact. Vineyards are farmed organically with biodynamic practices in place. Made in the traditional method with no additives, stabilization or filtration. Harvested in small bins and macerated on the skins for four hours.  This process helps to give those beautiful pink hues. Primary fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks for 21 days. This was followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation.La Rosa is a fresh and aromatic rosé at its most elegant expression. A distinct Mediterranean character with wild fruit/citrus notes and subtle, elegant floral tones bringing clean definition. Captivating and fresh on the palate with delicate yet vervy energy. 50% Sumoll, 30% Parellada, 20% Xarel-lo.

2016 Mount Eden Vineyards Reserve Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

Normally $99.99–$84.99 15% Off This Week ONLY!

About the Winery

Founded in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original “boutique” California winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mount Eden’s lineage of estate bottled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is the longest in California. Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, these low-yielding estate vineyards have consistently produced world-class wines for over a half-century. Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden.  His emphasis is on wine growing rather than winemaking; and an obsession with gentleness and naturalness in the handling of the grapes and wines is his ongoing passion.

About the Wine

The Reserve program began with the 2007 vintage, after an enlightening trip to Burgundy. 2016 will be the eighth Reserve Chardonnay bottling. The track record for aging with these wines has been incredible, much like the Estate Chardonnay—even better in fact. The Team at Eden create this wine by selecting eleven barrels from the vintage, which has been aging on the lees in French oak (50% new, 50% 1-year) for ten months. The wine and lees are stirred then transferred to a stainless steel tank. The Reserve then sits untouched for another twelve months. During this time, the lees are absorbed into the wine and disappear. This Chardonnay is bottled after a full 22-months in the cellar.

Very complex on the nose, with aromas of mint, toast and lilac, this rich yet elegant wine has flavors on the palate of lemon and hazelnut with marzipan lingering in the lengthy aftertaste. Expect a long life with proper cellaring. 251 cases produced.

Critical Acclaim

“The 2016 Chardonnay Reserve is the stuff dreams are made of. Towering and statuesque in its pedigree, the Reserve shows why the Santa Cruz Mountains is such a special place. The 2016 is deep, powerful and intense, and yet it remains remarkably finessed as well. Tangerine oil, mint, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes all develop with a few hours of aeration. The Reserve is a blend of 11 barrels (all neutral oak) that spends its second winter on its lees in tank, an approach that is common in Burgundy, but that is not often seen in California. All I can say is: Wow!”–97 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

“IS MOUNT EDEN CALIFORNIA’S GREATEST VINEYARD? Every time I have a great aged Mount Eden wine – which is most of the time – I’m in awe of how well it develops. This is a unique property in the sense that all three of the major grapes grown there – Cabernet, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – not only are distinctive and classy, but they age incredibly well. Suppose if one were to only collect wine from one vineyard, Mount Eden would be a tough choice to beat.”–James Laube, Wine Spectator

“Mount Eden refuses to conform to the stylistic demands of today’s market, which emphasize power, lush fruit flavors and immediate gratification over nuance, minerality and balance. The cabernets are more sinewy and lean than rich and concentrated. The pinot noir, which is made in very small quantities, is light-bodied and graceful rather than sweet and plush. And, rather than flavors of oak, butterscotch, tropical fruit and popcorn, the Chardonnay offers captivating texture and subtle flavors wound around a core of lively acidity. It takes time to unravel, sometimes many years, which puts Mount Eden in the company of great historic California chardonnay producers like Stony Hill and Hanzell.”–Eric Asimov, NY Times

Snack of the Week:

Goat Aged Gouda

In Holland, a country inundated with Gouda, this is probably the most unusual export. Younger pasteurized goat Gouda, only aged for several months, has a supple snow-white paste that’s mild and vaguely sweet with no typical goat-y flavors. This aged version is held for at least one year before release, resulting in a rough and stony wheel with a deep toffee-colored interior smattered with white patches of crystalline minerals. The milky sweetness of the younger version intensifies into a caramelized, burnt sugary treasure with a similarly crunchy texture to boot. The unapologetic butterscotch is well suited to giant, juicy Zinfandel.
