About the Winery

Founded in 1932 by husband and wife team - Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño, the Muga Family is synonymous with tradition and the skill of an artisan. Three generations have now contributed to the history of this Rioja cellar.

Bodegas Muga is the only winery left in Spain that uses only oak throughout the entire process of elaboration of their wines. Muga has its own cooperage and directly importing American and French oak makes this possible. The winery manufactures about 2,000 barrels each year. The wine is racked every four months by gravity and the use of candles to detect sediment. Fining is done by egg whites. The process takes over two months as the raft of egg whites sink to the bottom of the vat. This is a very expensive technique, but it succeeds in giving Muga reds a distinctive velvety texture. The vineyards are nestled in the foothills of the Montes Obarenes in the heart of Rioja Alta. The winery owns approximately 620 acres of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura, and Malvasia vineyards, and it controls an additional 370 acres from other growers.

About the Wine

Garnacha, Viura and Tempranillo. Situated mainly on calcareous clay and ferrous clay soils from the upper Najerilla district. Hand-harvested, after a period of 5 hours gentle maceration in the press, the must ferments at a temperature controlled at around 16-18ºc for 15-20 days. This enables the team at Muga to preserve to the maximum the aromatic complexity and intensity of the grapes from which the wine is made. Once fermentation is complete, it remains with its fine lees in suspension for 12 weeks in order to heighten the smooth mouth-feel.

A beautiful pale pink Provençal color when poured. Expect aromas of flowers, especially rose petals, and almonds. Fruit aromas come through well too, red berry fruits, wild strawberries together with some creamy vanilla notes. On the palate, there’s a soft full attack, quite succulent followed by lovely acidity that balances out the first impressions of sweetness. The wine then develops beautifully with a tangy, refreshing finish. A nicely balanced rosé with surprising complexity.

About the Winery

Giorgio Rivetti’s magic touch with Moscato, Barbera, Nebbiolo and, more recently, Sangiovese, Colorino, Vermentino and Sangiovese Rosé has taken the wine world by storm. He produces approachable yet age-worthy wines that command the attention of wine critics and consumers alike, year-in and year-out; their lushness, concentration, aromatics and length are unrivaled. Giorgio’s speedy ascent from Moscato producer in the 1970’s to venerated Barbaresco and Barolo vigneron today is studded with success.

The genius of La Spinetta encompasses a vast array of great wines, all boasting an inimitably approachable and voluptuous style. From Moscato to Nebbiolo to Sangiovese, whatever Giorgio touches turns to gold. His pioneering single-vineyard Barberas and Barbera/Nebbiolo blend “Pin” are considered to be the best of the Langhe. His Barbareschi and Baroli are at the very top of their category. In fact La Spinetta’s wines are among Italy’s most celebrated, as the winery has attained the coveted Tre Bicchieri award for more than 30 of their wines throughout their relatively short career. Let it never be said, however, that the greatness of La Spinetta is inaccessible to the average consumer; from the longtime favorite Barbera d’Asti “Ca’ di Pian,” featured in numerous magazines as a Best Value, to the Langhe Nebbiolo, a bottling of young vine fruit from the famed Starderi vineyard in Barbaresco, the winery offers incredible opportunities to experience the beauty of their best crus at a fraction of the cost.

About the Wine

45-50-year-old Nebbiolo vines from a 6.5 hectare vineyard on the western side of Nieve with a southern exposure. Situated on calcareous soil at 820 feet above sea level. Harvested in the first and second week in October, fermented in rotofermenters for 7 to 8 days. Afterwhich the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and aging for 20-22 months in entirely new, medium-toasted French oak barriques, plus one year aging in bottle.

Critical Acclaim

“The 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is outrageously beautiful. Dense, powerful and rich, the 2016 races out of the glass with huge fruit to match its classically mid-weight profile. Super-ripe red/purplish berry fruit, wild flowers, licorice and mint play off the huge tannins with real grace. Readers have to be patient, but the 2016 Starderi is a rock star wine. That's pretty much all there is to it.”–96 Points, Antonio Galloni Vinous

“One of Italy’s most fashionable winemakers/proprietors, Giorgio Rivetti displays a masterful touch whether he is making Barbera, Moscato d’Asti, or his proprietary red wine Pin.”–Robert Parker, Jr.

“Giorgio Rivetti, owner and winemaker of La Spinetta in Barbaresco, has become one of the leading forces in Piedmont. He’s making exciting ripe, fruit-forward Nebbiolos that would give many highly rated New World wines a run for their money. Now he’s making waves in Barolo….Rivetti is first and foremost a winemaker—one of the best and most innovative winemakers in Piedmont today. But he is also in tune with today’s consumer, whom he believes shares his preference for wines that are more approachable on release.”–The Wine Spectator
