About the Winery

Lopez de Heredia - one of the most venerable producers in Spain– produces traditional, age-worthy Rioja. Their wines are legendary and still made the way they were when the winery was founded over 130 years ago. Following a tradition that has been passed down through generations, their wines are released at least five to ten years after harvest, which provides added complexity and elegance to their Crianzas and Gran Reservas.

The winery itself is a remarkable structure. When D. Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta began building the bodega in the late 1800's, little did he realize that his masterpiece would one day be acknowledged as an example to the rest of the industry of the most perfect combination of buildings and vineyards. Like many medieval masterpieces, it is still incomplete. The buildings stand below and above ground, and are a veritable "cathedral to wine".  Moving through the vaulted underground corridors and staircases, you find yourself traveling back in time, and the founder’s touch can still be sensed in the very stones and fabric of the building.

About the Wine

This vintage, 2008, is classified by The Regulating Council as VERY GOOD. With a more mild and drier summer, this helped the growth and health of the grapes; which led to a better harvest than the previous one with similar quality. The weather conditions were exceptional during the final phase, something that is always decisive for the quality of the harvest. Bosconia was harvested on the 30th of October, which was the last of their vineyard sites to be harvested. The soil is a mixture of clay and limestone, and the average age of the vines is 40 years. The vineyard site consists of 15 ha, 11 of which are Tempranillo, 2 ha of red Garnacho, 1 ha of Mazuelo and 1 ha of Graciano.

This wine has evolved perfectly showing a deep ruby color with shades of orange. Its nose is persistent, full bodied and showing a lot of mature fruit, being dominated by the Tempranillo grape. On the palate the wine is round, smooth, fresh, full of body and persistent. Aged for five years in barrel, being racked twice per year and fined with fresh egg whites. Bottled unfiltered. Perfect with roasted and highly flavored meats, lamb and game. Tempranillo (80%), Garnacho (15%), Mazuelo and Graciano, the remainder, all from their own vineyards. Just over 6,600 cases produced.

About the Winery

Los Bermejos is situated on the slop-side of the Canary Islands. With a landscape that could be considered extraterrestrial, the volcanic ash absorbs any rain that falls (which is a small amount). From there, the water absorbs into the roots of the vines which forms an insulating layer from the sun. In order to combat the winds and other weather conditions of this region, the winery built a four foot stone wall around each crater. The cultivation of the vines is characterized by not having suffered the phylloxera plague, caused by a nematode that wiped out crops on the European continent in the second half of the nineteenth century. Due to this luck on the islands, the varietals that were obliterated everywhere else, are still flourishing there. The combination of the low rainfall, low yields of fruit from the vine, and sunshine makes the winemaking process a true diamond in the rough.

About the Wine

A white varietal that hails from the Canary Islands. As seen in the photo above, the vines are planted in man-made craters up to four feet deep in the volcanic soil. This, along with the climate in the region, allows for a unique richness. When first poured, hues of pale gold are accompanied by a juice that is full of character. This wine is succulent yet the palate explodes with citrus and minerality upon first sip. A flavor profile that includes pear and nectarine, citrus lingers at the finish– this wine is smooth and well balanced yet fun and interesting.
