2013 Cazar Russian River Valley Chardonnay - $24.99/$21.24
This is the perfect Chard to stock up on for summer and grilling season. You won't find another bottle of wine at this level of quality for such a low cost. We were wowed with the amazing value of this Chardonnay and are so happy to be able to give our customers this amazing product at this price!
The Estate: Cazar is a side project from winemaker Bill Hunter, the mastermind behind the Chasseur wines, which are also favorites here at Tewksbury Fine Wines. While the Chasseur label focuses on the wines of the cool, far west reaches of Sonoma County--Occidental, Freestone, Sebastopol--the Cazar label has a bit broader scope, and the wines are made in a more approachable style. Still, there's Hunter's trademark sense of balance and place, packed into a priced-for-frequent-drinking package.
The Wine: "Gold in color, this wine has aromas of citrus and pear. Apricot and pear dominate on the palate with layers of honey. The long toasty finish with nuances of creamy vanilla seems to last indefinitely. A slight crispness allows for matching with fish as well as big chicken or pork dishes.
There is very little to say about this dream vintage which couldn't have come out any better if it were drawn up on a blackboard ahead of time. A warm spring for set and a warm summer sans the requisite excessive heat, even ripening all the way to late September/mid-October made for a combination of high yields and high quality." -Winery
2013 Herdade do Sobroso "Sobro" Rosé - $14.99/$12.74
The Estate: Herdade do Sobroso lies at the very extreme eastern fringe of Alentejo, Protugal, close to the Alqueva dam and the Spanish border. Established in 2002 with 52 Hectares under vine, Herdade do Sobroso is run by renowned enologists Filipe Teixeira and Luis Duarte. The vineyard has loam-clay, sandy soil and the design of the vineyards matches the toughest criteria, to assure the production of highest quality grapes. The area is known for its cool winters, followed by long, hot summers. The principal red grape varieties are Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Grossa and Trincadeira, while the white wines essentially come from Antão Vaz, Arinto & Perrum grape varieties.
The Wine: Boasting a dark pink color, the Sobro Rosé is so clear that it sparkles. There are predominant aromas of cherry and strawberry jam. The wine is well balanced, rounded in the mouth with a well-defined freshness. Pairs extremely well with chili, Asian cuisine, or other spicy foods.
2012 B. Kosuge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - ON SALE - $29.74!
*Wine of the Week*
Kosuge's wines have been a staple in the shoppe even since we discovered them. From the elegant and luxurious Chardonnay to this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, we have been blown away by the quality and excellence that this winemaker has delivered in the past few years. His wines are a true reflection of their terroir, and perfectly represent the wonderful soils that grow these grape varietals. While these wines are a staple to us, they are also extremely limited production which means they sell out quick. Hope you enjoy!
The Estate: "Owner and winemaker Byron Kosuge was born and raised in the Central Valley town of Davis, California. The first fifteen years of his winemaking career were spent making wine at Saintsbury in Carneros, where he established himself as a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialist. After leaving Saintsbury in 2001, Byron assumed winemaking duties for several small projects, including Miura Vineyards (where he still consults), McIntyre Vineyards and Aiena Wines, all in California, as well as, more recently, for our very own Kingston Family Vineyards in Casablanca, Chile. His own label, B. Kosuge Wines, focuses on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from several different sites in the Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Mendocino and the Russian River Valley." - Importer
The Wine: "2012 was one of those rare vintages that gave good wine and (relatively speaking) lots of it. This bottling, labeled simply "Sonoma Coast," is a blend of wines from the three Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir vineyards I currently work with: Hirsch, Baranoff and Small Vines Estate. They are fairly different sites spread out over the western part of the Sonoma Coast AVA--Baranoff is just north of Sebastopol, Small Vines is a little west of there at slightly higher elevation and Hirsch is way out west, on the ridge tops above Fort Ross. Quite different sites but what they share is fruit of great precision and energy. The barrels that went into this blend were perhaps not quite as exalted as those I bottled as Hirsch and The Habitat, but they are still quite good, and an excellent expression of the greater Sonoma Coast." - B. Kosuge
